Record-breaking heat to impact 22 U.S. states this week
A surge of summer-like heat is forecast to affect 22 states across the U.S. this week, with temperatures exceeding 90°F (32°C) for approximately 50 million people and surpassing 100°F (38°C) for 11 million more. The most intense heat is expected in the Intermountain West, Plains, and South. Cities such as Las Vegas, Fresno, and Phoenix are predicted to experience record-breaking highs, with temperatures reaching 103°F (39°C), 102°F (39°C), and 109°F (43°C), respectively. Near Death Valley, California, temperatures could soar to 117°F (47°C). This heat wave coincides with widespread drought conditions, affecting around 60% of the U.S., particularly in states like Colorado and Utah, where extreme drought persists. The heat is driven by a transient heat dome, influenced by weaker jet stream winds.
