11-Year-Old Diagnosed with Rare Disorder Causing Bleeding from Eyes, Nose, and Ears
An 11-year-old boy from India has been diagnosed with hematohidrosis, a rare condition that causes spontaneous bleeding from the eyes, nose, ears, and other parts of the body. The boy's symptoms began without any apparent cause and were initially baffling to doctors. Despite the alarming nature of the episodes, they typically stopped within minutes and did not cause the child any pain. After extensive testing, which ruled out other blood disorders, the diagnosis of hematohidrosis was confirmed. This condition is extremely rare, with fewer than 50 documented cases worldwide, and is often associated with extreme emotional or psychological stress. In this case, the boy's episodes were linked to academic stress, peer pressure, and parental expectations. Treatment included the use of propranolol, a beta blocker, and cognitive behavioral therapy, which significantly reduced the frequency of the bleeding episodes.
