Rediscovery of Centuries-Old Gravestone of Free Black Man in Boston Highlights Historical Significance
Boston's Historic Burying Ground Initiative has rediscovered the gravestone of a free Black man named 'Boston' in the Granary Burial Ground. The gravestone, dated 1728, is believed to be one of the oldest markers of a free Black person in the U.S. The gravestone was partially buried and damaged, requiring restoration. Research linked the gravestone to Sebastian, a formerly enslaved man whose life was documented by historian Gloria McCahon Whiting. Sebastian, who later became known as Boston, was influential in advocating for marriage rights for enslaved individuals and was a respected community member. His obituary in 1729 highlighted his virtuous character and the esteem he held in the community.
