British Dive Team Discovers Wreckage of US Coast Guard Cutter Tampa, Solving Century-Old Mystery
A British volunteer dive team has located the wreckage of the US Coast Guard cutter Tampa, which was sunk by a German U-boat in 1918 during World War I. The ship was found 300 feet underwater, approximately 50 miles off the coast of Cornwall. The Tampa was part of a wartime convoy and was torpedoed by the German submarine UB-91, resulting in the deaths of all 131 people on board, including 111 Coast Guard members, 16 British Navy personnel, and four US Navy staffers. The discovery was made after a three-year search initiated by the dive team, which first contacted the US Coast Guard in 2023. The Coast Guard provided historical records and technical data to assist in confirming the wreck site.
