Energy Nationalism and Interconnectors Pose Challenges to European Power Security
The reliance on interconnectors for electricity supply has become a focal point of concern in Europe, particularly in the context of recent heatwaves and political tensions. Interconnectors, which allow for cross-border electricity transfers, are crucial for balancing supply and demand across European grids. However, political decisions, such as Norway's ban on new interconnectors and potential policy shifts in France, threaten the stability of this system. The UK's National Energy System Operator (Neso) has faced challenges in managing these interconnections, including cutting off exports to the Netherlands and restricting power flows to ensure domestic supply. These developments highlight the vulnerabilities in relying heavily on interconnectors, especially as political landscapes shift.
