Indian Billionaire's Son Proposes Relocation of Pablo Escobar's Hippos to India
Anant Ambani, son of Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani, has proposed relocating 80 hippos, descendants of those originally imported by Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar, to his Vantara animal sanctuary in Gujarat, India. These hippos, native to sub-Saharan Africa, have become an environmental concern in Colombia due to their growing population, which has led to plans for their culling. Ambani's offer aims to provide a safe and humane solution for the hippos, despite logistical challenges and the sanctuary's controversial history. Vantara, which houses over 150,000 animals, has faced allegations of illegal wildlife sourcing, though these claims were dismissed by India's Supreme Court. The proposal involves significant logistical and financial challenges, including the capture and transport of the hippos, which could cost over $4 million.
