Five Eyes Intelligence Warns of Chinese Espionage via LinkedIn Targeting Western Personnel
The Five Eyes intelligence alliance, which includes the FBI, MI5, and agencies from Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, has issued a joint advisory warning that Chinese intelligence operatives are increasingly using LinkedIn and other professional networking sites to target individuals with access to sensitive national security information. These operatives are reportedly posing as recruiters or consultants, offering job opportunities or consultancy pitches to approach government, military, and policy personnel. The advisory highlights that these interactions often begin with legitimate-seeming offers but can escalate to requests for sensitive information. LinkedIn has stated that it actively removes fake accounts and combats state-linked abuse. China has denied these allegations, claiming it is also a target of foreign intelligence operations.
