Climate Crisis Intensifies Drought in Europe, Impacting Agriculture and Energy
Europe is experiencing severe drought conditions exacerbated by extreme heat linked to the climate crisis. A scientific analysis has found that record-breaking heatwaves have intensified the evaporation of water from rivers, lakes, soils, and plants. This situation has led to emergency water use restrictions in several countries, with southern England under a hosepipe ban. The drought is causing significant agricultural losses, with an estimated 9 million tonnes of grain expected to be lost across Europe. The drought has also affected hydropower generation and cargo shipping due to low river levels, particularly in the Rhine. The analysis highlights the strong connection between human-induced climate change and the drying of European summers.
