NYC Department of Investigation Report Reveals Flaws in NYPD Disability Pension System
A report from the New York City Department of Investigation (DOI) has highlighted significant vulnerabilities and potential misuse within the NYPD's accident disability pension system. The DOI Commissioner, Nadia Shihata, stated that the current administration of these benefits creates risks for improper payments and lacks consistent standards compared to other law enforcement retirement systems. The Police Pension Fund, which manages $3.6 billion in annual retirement payments to over 50,000 retired NYPD officers, allocated $935 million to accident disability pensions in fiscal year 2025. The investigation was prompted by anonymous tips regarding officers receiving these pensions despite appearing to be in good health.
