New Study Reveals Overlooked Causes of Persistent Arthritis Pain
Researchers at Semmelweis University have identified non-inflammatory factors contributing to persistent symptoms in rheumatoid arthritis patients. The study, published in Nature Reviews Rheumatology and The Lancet Rheumatology, highlights the role of sleep disorders, depression, obesity, and smoking in sustaining arthritis symptoms, even when inflammation is controlled. This research suggests that these factors can create self-reinforcing cycles of pain and fatigue, complicating treatment. The team developed a model to help doctors identify these underlying causes, potentially improving patient outcomes by addressing these factors alongside traditional inflammation-focused treatments.
