Indonesia Begins Construction of First French-Designed Submarine for Strategic Autonomy
Indonesia has commenced the construction of its first Scorpène Evolved submarine, designed by the French Naval Group, at the PT PAL shipyard in Surabaya, Java. This marks a significant step towards Indonesia's goal of achieving strategic autonomy in submarine technology. The project involves a comprehensive transfer of technology, enabling Indonesia to eventually build its own submarines independently. The first submarine is expected to be delivered to the Indonesian Navy by 2032, with a second one planned for 2033.
