Severe Weather Expected Across Central U.S. This Weekend
A multiday severe weather outbreak is forecast to impact the central United States starting this weekend, with the potential for large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes. According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center (NWS SPC), areas at greatest risk include the Great Plains and the Corn Belt, particularly central and eastern Nebraska, southeast South Dakota, northwest Iowa, and southwest Minnesota on Sunday. By Monday, the risk shifts southward to include Kansas, as well as cities like Lincoln, Omaha, and Des Moines. The forecast highlights the likelihood of supercell thunderstorms capable of producing significant tornadoes and hail up to three inches in diameter. This active weather pattern is driven by a large-scale atmospheric shift, bringing Gulf moisture northward and creating conditions favorable for severe storms. Additional rounds of storms are expected to persist into next week, potentially extending into early June.
