New Plaque in Rockford's Greenwood Cemetery Honors Revolutionary War Veteran Jehial Harmon
A new historical marker has been installed in Rockford's Greenwood Cemetery, commemorating Jehial Harmon, a Revolutionary War veteran buried there. The 10-foot brown and gold plaque, located on North Main Street, was unveiled and dedicated during a ceremony hosted by the Kishwaukee chapter of the Illinois Sons of the American Revolution (SAR). This initiative is part of the Illinois SAR’s Cemetery Marking Project, which aims to identify and document Revolutionary War veterans buried across the state and promote the preservation of their gravesites. Jehial Harmon is the only Revolutionary War veteran known to be buried in Rockford, and his gravesite was previously marked in 1902 by the Rockford chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). The ceremony drew nearly 50 attendees, including members of the Auburn High School JROTC Cadets, local SAR and DAR chapters, and the Children of the American Revolution (CAR).
