Critical Fire Weather Alerts Issued Across Five States, Including Alaska
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued 'critical fire weather condition' warnings, also known as red flag warnings, across five states due to a dangerous combination of high winds, low humidity, and unseasonably warm temperatures. The affected areas include large portions of the Northern Plains—North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Montana—as well as Delta Junction in Alaska. Wind speeds are expected to range from 15 to 35 mph, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph in some locations. Relative humidity levels could drop as low as 10-20%, creating conditions where vegetation can dry out and ignite rapidly. Temperatures in parts of the Plains are forecast to climb into the upper 80s and 90s°F (31-37°C), further exacerbating the fire risk. Isolated storms in some areas may also produce erratic wind gusts, increasing the potential for sudden fire spread.
