Community-Based Care Reduces Depression and Self-Harm in Indian Urban Slums
The ARTEMIS project, led by The George Institute for Global Health, has successfully implemented a community-based care model to address mental health issues among adolescents in urban slums of New Delhi and Vijayawada, India. The study, published in JAMA Psychiatry, involved over 70,000 adolescents and demonstrated significant reductions in depression, self-harm, and suicide risks. The project utilized digital mental health care and anti-stigma campaigns, enrolling 3,739 adolescents, with 47.1% identified as high-risk. The intervention provided care through trained primary health care providers, significantly improving mental health outcomes.
