U.S. Retailers Halt Mexican Produce Imports Amid Cyclospora Outbreak Concerns
Several major U.S. retailers and restaurants have ceased sourcing produce from central Mexico due to a cyclosporiasis outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms. The outbreak has resulted in 4,173 confirmed cases, with over 7,400 suspected cases, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb highlighted that the outbreak might be connected to other produce like parsley and cilantro from the same region. The FDA's investigation suggests potential contamination from raw sewage due to weather conditions, though the exact cause remains under investigation. Taylor Farms has voluntarily suspended production and removed potentially affected products from the market.
