Boston University Digitally Preserves African and Islamic Manuscripts, Safeguarding Cultural Heritage
Boston University researchers have successfully digitized over 52,000 pages of historic West African documents, including a 230-year-old copy of the Jawāhir al-Maʿānī (Jewels of Meanings), a significant piece of African Islamic history. This project, supported by the British Library’s Endangered Archives Programme, involved sourcing and photographing original manuscripts, many of which were in fragile condition. The documents, which include poems, prayers, and historical essays, were written in both classical Arabic and Ajami, a modified Arabic script used for African languages. The digitization effort aims to preserve these invaluable texts for future generations and make them accessible to a global audience.
