Mahamat Deby Itno Declared Winner of Chadian Presidential Election
Mahamat Deby Itno, Chad’s military leader, has been declared the winner of the presidential election, according to provisional results released on Thursday. Deby Itno assumed power in 2021 following the death of his father, Idriss Deby, who was killed during fighting with northern rebels. His leadership initially came through a Transitional Military Council. The 2024 presidential election, preceded by a 2023 constitutional referendum, has now confirmed him in office. Chad, a unitary presidential republic with its capital in N'Djamena, has a history of political instability, including a protracted civil war that began in 1965 and involved external powers like Libya, France, and the United States. Oil production, which began in 2003, has significantly impacted the country's public finances and strengthened its relationships with France and the United States, particularly in regional counterterrorism efforts against groups like Boko Haram.
