Amateur Detectives Uncover Largest Viking Coin Hoard in Norway
In Norway, two hobbyists using metal detectors have discovered the largest known stash of Viking Age coins in the country. Initially finding 19 silver coins in a field near Rena, their discovery prompted a professional archaeological excavation. Over 3,150 coins have been recovered so far, with the search ongoing. The coins, dating from the late 900s to early 1000s, originate from England, Germany, Denmark, and Norway, reflecting a period when foreign currency was prevalent in Norway. This find is considered historic, offering insights into the economic and cultural exchanges during the Viking Age.
