Education Department Excludes Accounting from Professional Degree Loan Eligibility
The U.S. Department of Education has finalized regulations that exclude accounting from the list of professions eligible for up to $200,000 in student loans for graduate and professional degree programs. Despite lobbying efforts from accounting organizations, the department maintained its stance, including only 11 professions such as law and medicine. The decision is part of broader changes under the Working Families Tax Cuts Act, which also consolidates student loan repayment plans and phases out the Graduate Plus Program. The exclusion of accounting has sparked debate over the recognition of accounting as a professional degree.
