San Francisco Board President Removes Supervisor from Housing Committee Amid Legislative and Political Tensions
San Francisco Board President Rafael Mandelman has removed Supervisor Bilal Mahmood from a city housing committee. Mahmood alleges this action stems from his intent to propose amendments to Mandelman's historic preservation legislation. Mahmood's proposed amendments would require that any loss in potential housing production due to expanded historic preservation be offset by increasing building height limits on other parcels. Mandelman, however, stated his goal is to form committees that reflect the board's overall sentiment and replaced Mahmood with Supervisor Matt Dorsey to maintain a 'YIMBY' (Yes In My Backyard) presence on the committee. This move also occurs amidst speculation that Mandelman and Mahmood may compete in a California State Assembly race in less than two years, though Mandelman denies this influenced his decision. Mahmood, who previously ran unsuccessfully for assembly in 2022, will no longer be able to directly introduce his amendments from within the Land Use Committee.
