Representative Maria Elvira Salazar Urges ICE to Halt Deportation of Nicaraguan Journalist Luis Galeano
U.S. Representative Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL) has called on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to prevent the deportation of Nicaraguan journalist Luis Galeano, who was recently detained in Florida. Salazar emphasized that returning Galeano to Nicaragua would place him in significant danger, citing the actions taken against him by President Daniel Ortega's government. Galeano was stripped of his Nicaraguan nationality and had his assets confiscated in February 2023, along with 93 other individuals, after being declared a 'traitor to the homeland' due to his critical journalistic work. He fled Nicaragua in December 2018 following an arrest warrant issued by a Managua judge.
