IMF Highlights Ghana's Gold Industry Challenges Amid Economic Growth
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has released an assessment of Ghana's economic situation, emphasizing the significant role of gold exports in the country's economic recovery. Ghana, Africa's largest gold producer, has seen a substantial increase in gold production, particularly from artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM). However, the IMF warns of the environmental and economic risks associated with illegal mining activities, known as 'galamsey'. The report highlights the need for Ghana to manage its gold resources responsibly to avoid long-term economic and environmental damage. The IMF also discusses the establishment of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) to oversee and regulate the gold industry, aiming to improve transparency and traceability in gold transactions.
