Texas Faces Prolonged Heatwave: Safety Measures for Outdoor Activities
Texas is experiencing a prolonged heatwave with temperatures consistently in the upper 90s to lower 100s °F (35-38 °C), according to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth. The heat index is expected to remain in the triple digits, and the Climate Prediction Center forecasts slightly above-normal temperatures throughout the fall. As students return to classrooms and athletic fields, updated safety protocols are being implemented, including the mandatory use of wet-bulb globe temperature meters for outdoor activities. These meters, originally developed for military training, are now being used to monitor heat conditions and ensure safety during sports and other outdoor events. Texas State Technical College (TSTC) is training students in its Occupational Safety and Environmental Compliance program to use these tools effectively.
