Senator Blumenthal Honors WWII Rescuer Hiram Bingham in Connecticut
In Connecticut, a ceremony was held to honor Hiram Bingham IV, a U.S. vice consul in Marseille during World War II, who helped over 2,000 Jews escape Nazi-occupied France. The event was attended by state officials, including U.S. Congressman Joe Courtney and Senator Richard Blumenthal. Bingham defied orders from the U.S. State Department by issuing visas to Jewish refugees, enabling their escape to the United States. His actions, which were initially unrecognized, have since been celebrated posthumously. The Connecticut legislature has established July 17 as Hiram Bingham IV Day to commemorate his contributions.
