Stephen A. Smith Relocates to Florida Citing High Taxes in California and New York
ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith has moved his primary residence to Florida, citing the high tax rates in California and New York as the primary reason for his decision. Smith, who signed a five-year extension with ESPN worth at least $100 million in 2025, stated that federal income tax, combined with California's state income tax of 13.6%, would leave him with less than 34% of his income. He expressed strong opposition to what he termed 'liberal policies that come to take your money.' Smith purchased a $9.25 million estate in Pinecrest, Miami-Dade County. He also noted that New York's tax structure, including a city income tax, contributes to similar financial burdens. This move highlights a growing trend among high-income earners to relocate to states with more favorable tax policies, such as Florida, which has no state personal income tax.
