Indiana Governor Requests Federal Emergency Aid After Severe Storms
Indiana has been hit by days of severe weather, including tornadoes, historic flooding, and a derecho, causing widespread damage and power outages. Governor Mike Braun has requested a presidential emergency declaration to secure federal assistance for emergency response efforts. The storms, which began on August 11, have resulted in significant destruction to homes, businesses, and infrastructure, as well as displacing families and disrupting essential services. Power outages peaked at over 300,000, and flooding reached 100-year levels in some areas, leading to road closures and damage. The Indiana National Guard has been deployed to assist in affected areas, including Gary, Munster, and Hobart, with resources such as boats, emergency generators, and evacuation support.
