Honolulu Opens Hurricane Refuge Areas Ahead of Tropical Storm Lala
The City and County of Honolulu are preparing for severe weather associated with Tropical Storm Lala by opening eight hurricane refuge areas on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at 8 a.m. These locations include Blanche Pope Elementary School, Castle High School, Kahuku Elementary School, Kapolei High School, Mililani High School, Moanalua High School, Nānākuli Elementary, and Roosevelt High School. The refuge areas, operated in partnership with the American Red Cross, will provide temporary protection for residents and visitors. Additionally, TheBus evacuation service will be available free of charge, with buses clearly marked for evacuation. The Homeless Outreach and Navigation for the Unsheltered (H.O.N.U.) program will relocate its residents to Kapolei High School gymnasium for safety during the storm. Officials urge everyone to monitor weather updates and bring essential supplies if using the refuge areas.
