New York Homes Face Highest Hurricane Risk in U.S., Report Finds
A recent report by property analytics firm Cotality highlights that the New York metropolitan area has the highest number of homes at risk from hurricane winds in the United States. Approximately 3.27 million homes in the region are classified as being at moderate or greater risk, with an estimated $1.93 trillion in potential reconstruction costs. Additionally, nearly 20% of these homes are also vulnerable to storm surges. While hurricanes are less frequent in the Northeast compared to Florida and the Gulf Coast, the region's high population density and property values amplify the stakes. The report also notes that the New York area lags behind southern regions in coastal preparedness and building practices, increasing its vulnerability. Other high-risk metro areas include Houston and Miami, with reconstruction costs of $824 billion and $616 billion, respectively.
