UNHCR Highlights Humanitarian Crisis as Thousands Flee Scam Compounds in Cambodia
Cambodia is experiencing a significant humanitarian crisis as thousands of workers flee scam compounds, following the extradition of a suspected scam kingpin to China. These compounds, prevalent in Cambodia, Myanmar, and Laos, are sophisticated operations where workers are often trapped and exploited. The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights estimated that up to 100,000 workers were involved in these scams in Cambodia alone in 2023. The Caritas shelter in Phnom Penh, previously funded by the United States, is overwhelmed and unable to accommodate the influx of escapees, many of whom are left without basic necessities. Despite international pressure, including from the U.S., South Korea, and China, the Cambodian government has been criticized for its lack of support for these victims. Amnesty International has documented chaotic and dangerous conditions for those attempting to leave the compounds, with many facing a lack of state support.
