Nonprofit LSI Opens Permanent Greenhouse for Refugee Farming Program in Iowa
Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI) has inaugurated a permanent greenhouse for its Global Greens program, aimed at supporting immigrant and refugee farmers. Located at the former Dogpatch Urban Gardens site in Des Moines, the facility includes two large greenhouses and a community-led food pantry. The program, which has faced federal funding cuts, provides training and resources for refugees and immigrants to start their own farming businesses. Participants can rent space to grow plants, with assistance from staff, many of whom are refugees themselves. The initiative is part of a broader effort to integrate urban agriculture into community development.
