New York Attorney General Finds No Criminal Charges Warranted in Fatal Pedestrian Accident Involving Off-Duty Erie County Sheriff's Office Member
New York Attorney General Letitia James’ Office of Special Investigation (OSI) has released its report concluding that no criminal charges are warranted against an off-duty member of the Erie County Sheriff's Office (ECSO) who struck and killed pedestrian Carl Slone. The incident occurred on January 9 at 3:16 p.m. on Elmwood Avenue in Buffalo, N.Y., when the off-duty deputy, pulling out of a parking lot in his personal truck, turned left onto Elmwood Avenue. Slone attempted to cross the street in an area without a marked crosswalk and was struck by the deputy's vehicle. The deputy immediately called 911 and attempted to provide aid. Slone was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead shortly after midnight on January 10. The OSI's investigation included interviews with civilian witnesses, review of the deputy’s written statement, body-worn camera footage, security camera footage, and a collision reconstruction analysis.
