Fuel Barge Grounds at San Juan Harbor, No Pollution Reported
A fuel barge has run aground on the rocks outside San Juan's harbor, as reported by the U.S. Coast Guard. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon when the barge grounded on the headland at the harbor entrance, near Castillo San Felipe del Morro. The site features a large rock breakwater and a riprap revetment lining the shore, where the barge is currently lodged and being affected by the surf. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, and there are no signs of pollution at this time. The Coast Guard has issued a marine safety broadcast and established a safety zone around the incident area. Despite the grounding, the harbor remains open to marine traffic as the barge is not obstructing the entrance. The vessel has been identified as the 265-foot tank barge Defiant, and it is believed to be unladen, as confirmed by Puerto Rico's environment secretary Waldemar Quiles.
