AI Systems Pose Nuclear War Risk by Amplifying Human Cognitive Biases, Not Malicious Intent
Current Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems, even without achieving superintelligence or possessing malicious intent, could inadvertently trigger a nuclear war. This risk stems from AI's capacity to amplify human cognitive blind spots, accelerate escalation spirals, and overwhelm decision-makers with vast amounts of information during high-stakes crises. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists highlights that ordinary human fallibility, when amplified by machine outputs, can lead to catastrophic outcomes. AI can shape the information presented to leaders, exploiting known vulnerabilities in human judgment through false, misleading, or out-of-context data. Even accurate information, if presented without proper context or under time pressure, can be misinterpreted, leading to a 'better-safe-than-sorry' mindset that justifies actions without fully considering the dangers.
