Five Arrested for Alleged Fraud in Lincoln Charter Amendment Petitions
The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with the Lancaster County Attorney’s Office and the Nebraska Attorney General's Office, is investigating nearly 20,000 rejected signatures from the Good Government Lincoln group. Five individuals from out of state have been arrested on suspicion of fraud related to these signatures, which were intended for petitions to amend Lincoln's city charter. The fraudulent signatures were primarily associated with a petition to impose term limits on City Council members. The investigation suggests that the circulators were involved in collecting and notarizing fraudulent signatures. Former state tax commissioner and state Sen. Tony Fulton, who runs the Good Government Lincoln group, expressed support for the investigation and prosecution of those involved.
