Federal Grants to Boost Homebuilding in 10 U.S. Cities Amid New Housing Act
Recent changes to the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, as part of the 21st Century Road to Housing Act, aim to stimulate homebuilding in U.S. cities that need it most. The bipartisan bill, now law, modifies how the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) allocates these grants, tying bonuses and penalties to new housing production. Cities like Milwaukee, Detroit, Toledo, Newark, and Cleveland are expected to benefit significantly. The CDBG program, established in 1974, provides funding for housing, infrastructure, and economic development, allowing cities flexibility in addressing local needs. However, the program has faced criticism for not keeping pace with inflation and for its limited impact on large city budgets.
