Germany Plans €12 Billion Long-Range Weapon Arsenal to Deter Russia
The German government is preparing to invest approximately €12 billion ($14 billion) into developing a new arsenal of long-range weapons. This initiative, reported by Politico, is a strategic priority for both Germany and NATO, aiming to enhance the German armed forces' capability to strike targets hundreds or thousands of kilometers behind enemy lines. The plan involves a four-phase strategy. The first phase, set for 2027, will introduce a new, low-cost cruise missile. The second phase focuses on acquiring US Typhon launchers armed with Tomahawk missiles, with an internal goal for initial operational readiness by the end of the decade. The final two phases involve joint development of advanced weapon systems with the United Kingdom, expected by the mid-2030s. This military buildup comes as Germany considers diplomatic action against Moscow due to increasing hybrid security threats, including a recent incident involving an explosive-laden drone near a Ukrainian cargo aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport.
