Minnesota Family Self-Deports to Ecuador Amid Immigration Challenges
A family from Columbia Heights, Minnesota, has voluntarily self-deported to Ecuador after facing challenges in their asylum process. Jorge, Blanca, and their daughter Amy decided to leave the U.S. despite their ongoing immigration case, citing threats they faced in Ecuador as farmers. The family, who had been living in Minnesota for three years, chose not to accept the U.S. government's offer of cost-free travel and a $2,600 exit bonus, as they hope to return to the U.S. in the future. They expressed a desire to contribute to the U.S. economy and not be a burden on the government. The family left behind a supportive community in Minnesota, where Jorge worked as a custodian and Blanca assisted in an elementary school.
