UNHCR Reports Over 600,000 Afghans Return from Pakistan Amid Challenges
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has reported that more than 600,000 Afghans have returned or been forced to return from Pakistan since the beginning of the year. Many of these individuals have crossed back into Afghanistan through the Torkham crossing. According to UNHCR spokesperson Charlie Goodlake, the returnees have faced significant challenges, including detention, confiscation of belongings, and serious security and livelihood issues while in Pakistan. The return process has raised concerns among migrant rights advocates, who emphasize the need for it to respect human rights and human dignity, especially for vulnerable families. The situation is compounded by the fact that many returnees had established lives in Pakistan, with homes, jobs, and children attending school, and now face the daunting task of rebuilding their lives in Afghanistan.
