Governor Hochul Launches Website to Aid Venezuelan Community Post-Earthquakes
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has introduced a new website aimed at supporting the Venezuelan community in the aftermath of two significant earthquakes that struck northern Venezuela. The earthquakes, with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, have resulted in over 5,000 deaths and more than 16,000 injuries. The website provides resources for New Yorkers to contribute to recovery and relief efforts, offering options to donate to organizations such as the Hispanic Federation, Aid for LIFE, Casa de Venezuela Orlando, and World Central Kitchen. Additionally, the site includes guidelines to help users avoid donation scams, which have become a concern as scammers may exploit the disaster to create fake charities. Governor Hochul also reiterated her support for Temporary Protected Status for eligible Venezuelans, emphasizing the importance of not forcing individuals to return to crisis-stricken countries.
