Madison City Crews Clear Protest Encampment, Resulting in 16 Arrests
City crews in Madison, Wisconsin, have cleared a protest encampment at the intersection of Williamson and Baldwin streets, following the police shooting of Corey Ruiz. The operation began early in the morning, with city trucks and the Wisconsin State Patrol arriving to remove the encampment. Protesters had gathered at the site to build a memorial for Ruiz, but the city decided to clear the area after demonstrators began creating barricades and an encampment. During the operation, fires were started by protestors, which were quickly extinguished by firetrucks and police in riot gear. The police reported that 16 individuals were arrested for unlawful assembly and obstructing an officer. The intersection was reopened after the removal of signs and barricades, and city sweepers cleaned the area. The city has arranged for unhoused individuals from the encampment to be transported to hotels.
