High School Students Influence Legislation to Streamline Youth Employment in Louisiana
In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the Legislative Youth Advisory Council (LYAC), composed of high school students, has successfully influenced state legislation to streamline the employment process for young workers. The council, which connects students with lawmakers, played a pivotal role in drafting Act 61 during the 2026 Legislative Session. This new law eliminates the cumbersome paperwork previously required for student work permits, digitizing the process through LA Works. The initiative was spearheaded by former LYAC member Brinkley Bennett, who highlighted the challenges faced by minors in securing employment due to extensive paperwork.
