Ames Municipal Airport Secures $7.8 Million Federal Grant for Runway Reconstruction
The Ames City Council has accepted a $7.8 million federal grant to fund a runway reconstruction project at the James Herman Banning Ames Municipal Airport in Ames, Iowa. This project aims to maintain the runway's compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards. The grant will not lead to an expansion of the airport or enable it to accommodate larger aircraft. The runway has significantly deteriorated due to heavy use and severe seasonal weather, with repeated winter freeze-thaw cycles causing moisture to seep into surface cracks, fracturing the pavement. This damage, exacerbated by impacts from corporate jets, has led to deep ruts and crumbling asphalt, posing a risk of foreign object debris that could jeopardize flight safety. The city council approved the grant just before a Wednesday deadline, as the FAA agreement was sent to the city on Friday, leaving only a few days for acceptance.
