Decline in Birth Rates in Major U.S. Cities Raises Concerns Over Urban Living Conditions
A significant decline in birth rates has been observed in major U.S. cities, with a reported 18% drop in large urban counties between 2010 and 2024. This trend is attributed to various factors, including the high cost of living, safety concerns, and overall quality of life, which are driving families to relocate. The number of children under 18 living in these cities has decreased by 6% over the past decade, with a more pronounced 15% drop among children under 5. Cities like San Jose, California, have seen a 34% reduction in the number of young children, the highest among large cities. Even cities considered relatively affordable, such as Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, are experiencing declines in their child populations.
