Dust Storm Warning Issued for Pima County, Arizona
A dust storm warning, also known as a 'haboob,' has been issued for northwestern Pima County, Arizona, by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Tucson. The warning, issued at 6:17 p.m. MST on August 30, 2026, is in effect until 7:15 p.m. MST. A wall of dust was detected moving northwest at 25 mph, stretching from 9 miles northeast of Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument to 10 miles southeast of Hickiwan. Visibility in the affected areas is expected to drop to less than a quarter mile, creating hazardous travel conditions. The warning highlights the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms following the dust storm. This phenomenon, common during Arizona's monsoon season, occurs when cold downdrafts from thunderstorms stir up loose desert dust, creating a massive wall of airborne particles.
