California State Lottery Commission Wins Lawsuit, Awarded Over $150,000 in Fees
The California State Lottery Commission has successfully defended itself in a lawsuit, securing a judgment and an award of $153,200 in attorneys' fees and costs. The case involved a man named James Densley who claimed he was improperly denied a $750,000 payout from a high-stakes poker ticket. Densley filed a breach-of-contract lawsuit in April 2022, asserting he purchased a ticket in September 2021 that revealed a winning flush. However, the Attorney General's Office, representing the commission, argued in court filings that the original ticket had been torn into pieces and reassembled with cellophane tape, thereby manipulating the play symbols to create a fraudulent winning hand. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Kevin C. Brazile signed off on the judgment, dismissing Densley's suit.
