Plains Deluge Halts Wheat Planting Amid Flood Risks
Heavy rainfall across the central and southern Plains is disrupting agricultural activities, particularly wheat planting, while improving soil moisture for the upcoming winter wheat crop. The Weather Prediction Center (WPC) has issued warnings for flash flooding in areas such as eastern Colorado, western Kansas, the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles, and parts of New Mexico. Rainfall totals are expected to reach 2–4 inches through September 30, with seven-day accumulations of 3–5 inches in the southern Plains. Saturated soils and ponding in low-lying fields are causing delays in planting and harvest activities for crops like corn, soybeans, and sorghum. While the moisture benefits wheat germination, prolonged saturation and crusting may pose risks to already planted fields. The eastern Corn Belt is also experiencing rain interruptions, though less severe than earlier forecasts.
