Elderly Wood Sculptor Vows to Fight Eviction from Jacob Taylor Beach in Trelawny
Walton Spence, a 75-year-old wood sculptor, is vowing to resist an eviction notice issued by the Natural Resources Conservation Authority (NRCA) from Jacob Taylor Beach in Trelawny. Spence, who has operated a craft shop on the beach for 34 years, is among approximately a dozen shop operators who received 30-day notices from the NRCA. The state agency claims ownership of the property and states the land is needed for 'public purpose' and 'for the purpose of being repaired and improved.' Spence asserts he has been permanently based on the beach since 1992 and has built his livelihood there. He, along with other operators, plans to seek legal representation to challenge the notices, viewing the beach as their primary source of income. Other long-term operators, including a fisherman running a bar since 1984 and a cookshop owner whose family has been there for four generations, also express their determination to fight the eviction.
