AI Cyclone Forecasting System Promises Extended Warning Times
Researchers from Google DeepMind and Google Research have developed WeatherNext Cyclones (WN-C), an AI system designed to improve the accuracy of tropical cyclone forecasts. The system outperforms existing models in tracking storm paths, forecasting intensity, and predicting wind extent. By analyzing decades of global weather data and nearly 5,000 historical cyclones, WN-C can provide more accurate predictions, offering communities over 30 additional hours of warning time. The AI system has been tested against historical data and active storms, demonstrating significant improvements in forecast accuracy.
