AWS Achieves NATO 'RESTRICTED' Data Approval, First Cloud Provider for All Member Nations
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced that it has received approval to process North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) 'NATO RESTRICTED (NR)' grade information on its cloud platform. This makes AWS the first cloud provider to achieve this level of approval for all NATO member countries. The approval is based on the 'NATO D32' guideline, which outlines the requirements for handling NR information in public clouds. AWS documented its security compliance, and the Spanish National Cryptologic Center conducted an evaluation of its cloud capabilities. NATO subsequently accepted these results and disseminated them to its member nations. This development means that NATO, its member countries, and defense partners can now establish systems to process NR-grade information using approved AWS services within AWS Regions located in member countries. However, actual operations will still necessitate official certification procedures from each individual country.
